Qtrax promises user free and legal music download. The interface is really smooth and with a nice design. I downloaded the software, installed it and registered. The idea of free music downloads is really tempting, and when it also has the word “legal” we are even more tempted to try it. But does it actually work?

Like I said, I downloaded and installed the software. The interface is well made and has a nice design. It is also easy to use. It has a web browser (Mozilla based) and a music player. With the browser you navigate the Qtrax music website and only from this software you can download the songs. The is well organized and easy to navigate. You need to register to be able to search for music, but that should not be a big problem considering registration is actually free.


Well…actually it is a problem. When you register you must choose a country from a list provided. Sadly there are very few countries in that list. I also send an email to the support team, but got no reply. Don’t worry. Just chose any country from there and you are ready to go. No verification of the country is made what so ever. So you can actually choose anything you like.

Now that I registered I can start to download music. I searched for one of my favorite bands and got a really big list of songs from them. They were all organized by year, album and genre. I clicked on the “Download ” button. I was really excited but sadly it did no last long. I got an error message saying that download will be available soon. What they mean by soon I don’t know. It can take a few days or even a few month. Anyway I browsed the site a little more and I stumble upon the “Most Downloaded” section. They were all from the same band (an unknown band by me) but I decided to try and download one to see how the software works.


I clicked on the “Download” button and to my surprise the download actually began. Then I tried to listen to the song, but all I got is an empty file. There was no music, even though the software acted like it was playing something. I also tried to download some more song (all from the same band) but the result was the same.

So as a conclusion, is Qtrax good? Well, actually no. At least not now. There are almost no download available and the ones that are ready for download don’t work. Considering that this is version 02 of the software and the final version will be released in the future we only have to hope that it will be a good software and that it will have a huge data base of music for you to enjoy.
