As you may know from a previous post that I have a CECT P168+ (chinese phone). The phone works grate, but it has a few major downsides. One of the most important downside is that the browser is really bad. It does not render almost any web page. I could not even access my gMail account. Well…I found a solution.

First of all, I must warn you that this involves editing things in the engineering mode. So, if you have a flashing cable this is the moment to make a backup of your firmware. Also, Don’t change enything else except for what I am telling you. You can really easy brick your phone if you don’t know what you are doing.

So, let get started. first of all go to engineering mode. To do this dial *#3646633# on the screen. You will see a list of setting. Go to Misc. and then to WAP. What we must do is change the type of pages the browser accepts. Go to Accept Header and change it to HTML. Until now the browser only accepted WAP2.0 pages. So rendering gMail or other more complex pages was impossible. Click OK and then Back.

Another thing we must to is trick the server to think we are using a more complex phone with a very advanced browser. That is why we must change the User Agent. Right now, it is set to MAUI E800. I tested a few and the one for Nokia N72, N93 and for SE E900i and W800i work best. if you have time (and money) test the others as well and if you find one that works better post it here. Press OK and then back.

Press the Red button to exit engineering mode. Now, you should be able to browse more websites. I also discovered that it opens pages a little faster than before. The thing is, that now it will open images as well. So it will make more traffic. Unless you have a plan that lets you browse website at very cheap prices from your mobile phone I don’t recommend this.

This should also work on the original CECT P168 and also on the CECT P168c, but I did not try it cause I don’t have any of the other phones.

Hope this was useful for you all.

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about other touch-screen phones. Phones that are much better than the iPhone in almost every aspect. After I rote that article I found out (from other users) about iPhone Clones. I serached the web and fount a few: CECT P168, CECT HiPhone and a few more that aren’t really worth to mention.
I liked the CECT P168 not because of it’s design (it looks almost identical to the iPhone) but because it is a little cheaper than the CECT HiPhone.
Compared to the iPhone, CECT P168 looks the same (at first sight) but if you look a little closer, you can see that it has more buttons than the original iPhone. This isn’t bad because I don’t like to answer the calls from the screen. I prefer a button that I can really push. This was there is a less chance of answering accidentally. Also, for its price of under 120$ (+shipping) I decided to get one (in my country there aren’t many iPhones, you can’t even buy one at the store…so I would really make a BUZZ to my friends when they will see it). So I decide: What the heck…it is cheap (sort off).

I searched on eBay for one (the cheappest of course) and bought it. The price of the phone was 95$ (and I had a car recharger, two batteries, card reader, 256MB microSD memory card, leather pouch, silicon protector and a screen protector included in the package). The shipping was another 35$, so the total price wasn’t really that bad. Everything worked smooth and in 14 working days I had a brand new iPhone clone.

It looked good and at the beginning I did not have any problems with it. Beautiful display, working touchscreen, a pen in case I don’t want to use my fingers, writing recognition, music player, 2MP camera, video player, bluetooth, WAP internet, email client (work with gmail and yahoo as well), eBook reader (supports TXT only) and a few other features. Almost everything a phone (not a PDA or smartphone) needs. Like i expected my friend’s first reaction was: WOOOW! You got an iPhone? :O (of course I told them it is only an iPhone close). But hey…I don’t have 400$ to spend on one.

The menu looks also just like the iPhone, but it does not have so many functions and animations. But like I said, I won’t spend 400$ just for animations. I want to talk to the phone, not watch how the menu opens. It has a basic music player, but it is enough for your daily needs. I did discover one bug in the music player: If you set the songs to shuffle, if you close and reopen the player it plays the songs continuously. You have to set it manually back to shuflle. But this isn’t such a big problem. Another small disadvange is that you don’t have an internal memory, but you can use a memory card (a 256MB one is included). The biggest downfall is that it does not have JAVA!!!! YES!!! At leas no one managed to install anything yet. As far as I heard there are people that are working on an update for the soft…but we will just have to wait and see.

So what is the total score? Well, if you don’t have 400$ to buy an original iPhone, get this one. If you want a better one that looks exactly like the iPhone 9including menu animation and so on) get the CECT HiPhone. From my point of view, just because it has the Apple and iPhone logo on it, it doesn’t mean it has to cost more than triple.

P.S. forgot to mention, you can use it as a webcam as well…to bad yahoo messenger does not support MJPG Webcam Compressions.
