18 days ago I made a small Game. By small…I mean really small. I was bored and wanted to make something fast. I decided not to work more than 60 minutes since I don;t really have time for anything. I decided to make an educational game. Want to here how it goes? The truth is I got lucky. I submited the game to MochiAds and it got featured. I did not expect this. Considering I worked only 54 minutes on a game. From there it was all upwards. I the first day it got more than 1000 plays. On the 2nd day 1700. After that I though it will get lost in on the net like all my other games: 3rd day it got 1300 views. 4th the same.

After that websites started to get the game so on the 5th day it got more than 2500 plays. Grown a lil on the 6th than started to lose plays gradually. Only to find that, to my surprise, it went back up six days later. It got more than 3000 plays. On the 7th it went up again to 3300.

At the current time, it has 2500 plays, and the day is not over yet. I also submited it to FlashGameDistribution and I expect to get some more plays this way as well.

Total revenue it generated? At this time I can say that from bordem and one hour of free time I managet to get 8,67$ (at the time of writing this post). It got 32,058 ad impressions from 158 hosts. And i do expect to get me even more revenue. I know it is not a furtune, but this game was not actually intended to make me money at all.

Also, it performs a lot better than all my other games, especially better than “UFO Maneuver”, a game that I hoped will get me some nice revenue, now is almost dead and made me only 0.76$ (what a shame).

What were the public’s reactions? At first I bad.I got all sorts of comments like “Never mix gaming and learning” or “If I wanted to do math I would have stayed in school”, but I also got some nice comments and I really think that this game helped some 3rd grade children practice there math skills.

Will I make another education game? Don’t know. Currently I don’t have the time, even though I have a good idea. I don’t know if an educational game can make it on the front page of Newgrounds or Kongregate. That is where the big bucks are. I got all sorts of advice about edugames, both positive and negative. So I haven’t decided yet.

If anyone is interested in viewing the stats of the game, I set up a share link that can be accesed here: Math Test Stats

As a conclusion: sometimes, the simplest idea and very little work can get you more than hours of thinking. It is a combination of luck and skills. All have a role to play in the success of your game. An educational game will always have a different user base than TD or shooting games, but they can survive, although getting on the front page of popular websites is almost impossible.

P.S.If anyone is interested in playing the game, you can check it out here: Math Test Flash Game

The internet has evolved a lot since it first began. Content becomes more and more complex and the posibilities seem unlimited. Let’s take a journey to the past to see how it all began, come back to the present and see what lies in the future of the internet.

The internet was created by ser Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989. He wanted something to send and receive information between many computers located in CERN. Actually he wanted to be able to store some data (test results and many more) on a computer and other could connect and read those datas.

Every resource was accesed by it’s adress or URL (uniform resource locator). There was also a protocol for accesing these datas: HTTP. These resources were viewed as documents and these documents could contain inside them other URLs. He had the ideea that “everythink could link to everything”. This way the Internet was born. At first very small but it growned fast.

But is actually a website? A website is a colection of many pages (documents) conected to one-another that refer to a specific company or organization. There are also web aplications. These aplications are web pages rendered dinamycally that is ment to give the user some sort of functionality. The interactivity between the user and the web server is done throught a web interface. The web interface actually is the site. Web application=Interface+Data+Program. All of them are important. If one fails, the entire architecture fails.

What about Web 2.0? Most of you will think of fancy layouts with glossy buttons and cool reflexions. But that isn’t actually Web2.0 in terms of programming. Web 2.0 means that the user can generate content. In web 1.0 the user was just a consumer. The web was most “Read-only”.

“The web is more a social creation than a technical one. The ultimate goal of the Web is to support and improve our web?like existence in the world. We clump into families, associations, and companies. We develop trust across miles and distrust around a corner.” – Tim Berners?Lee

Tim O’Reilly in 2005 said that Web 2.0 means that the user can control the data on the web. So this lead to the apparition of new applications: Weblogs (Blogs), Wikis, Social Networking Websites, Potcasts, Videocasts and many more. Later, this lead to the apparition of servicies and NOT program packages. Many programs like MS Office started to be replaced, slwoly but surely, by services like Google Docs, Photo Album software have been replaced almost completly by Adobe Photoshop Express or similar services. The list can go on.

This way, the web was not read-only anymore but read/write web. Any user can ad new content to the web with a few clicks. The user now chooses exactly what, when and were he wants to see. But with this freedom there was also a problem of rights. That is why Creative Commons appeared: reasonable, flexible copyright. Everyone was happy: The original author and the readers and users as well.

Web blogs became very popular in this period. There were hundreds of new blogs every day. Also a new ideea, micro-blogs, evolved later on (Twitter). Wikis started to become more and more trusworthy. Everyone that needed some information about a specific historical event or a country or many more things would go to wikipedia to find it.

With all these there was a major problem. All of the websites needed you to log-in in order for you to make changes to the web. If you have accounts to many services you would need to have a different username and a pasword for each if you want to stay secure. If you have the same username/password, in case one gets hacked the hacker has acces to all the other accounts as well. Remembering these is really hard. so that is why OpenID was invented:one account to controll everything. High secure digital identity for each and unyque user.

Because of all this, a few problems can come to the surface. The main one is “information overlow”. To much data for the user to pick. A studdy has shown that 44% of the adult american population is a public web writer. In web 3.0 these problems start to be fixed. Web 3.0 is “Semantic Web”. The solution is RDF (Resource Description Framework). Using an association of meta-data the web is organized. This can also be done to create relations between people in Social Networking Websites. This evolotion will also lead to the aparition of other services like WebOS and Inteligent Services.

Conclusion:
Anyone can say anything about anything
No one knows everything about anything
My system is most valuable because of its interconnection to its peers

I’ve been lurking in these forums for a few months and have posted a couple of one-liners, but I feel like Digital Point and its members have taught me so much that I owe this community something more substantial than trite comments and zingers.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people ask questions about where they can get jobs and what they should charge. I haven’t been freelancing long so I’m not an expert, but I have built an income of around $1,000 per month working part-time and it only took me a few months to do it. If nothing else, I hope this post will help people who are just starting out.

Here are a couple of tips that helped me get started. Hopefully some of you will find it useful.

Join Elance

I expect a couple of hate posts for this suggestion. I’ve read multiple posts that bash this site for charging a monthly fee and a percentage of earnings. However, I found that this site gives better quality jobs than other freelance sites and I can make 10 times my monthly fee easily.

You can open a free account if you don’t want to spend the $10/month in the beginning, but you only get three connects which are basically three chances to bid on a job. I find that my bid is chosen for around 20% of the projects I bid on. I can influence this percentage somewhat by altering my bidding price for jobs- bringing me to my next point.

Alter Your Pay Rate

I got this idea when I read about a program that changes the price of event tickets based on demand. If there are a lot of people buying the tickets, the program automatically raises the price. When people stop buying, the price falls until the buying picks up again. I thought that formula would apply well to freelance writing.

Since my profile doesn’t have a lot of completed jobs, I tend to bid very competitively. Once I start getting work, I up my bids. The busier I get, the higher I bid. This system seems to work well because it allows you to raise your rates naturally until you find equilibrium.

The system works because as you get busier you’re bidding higher and taking on higher paying clients. When those clients become regulars, your minimum bid goes up because you’re backed up with higher paying work. The unfortunate end is that you may have to drop some of your lower paying clients. However, you might be surprised at how many won’t mind paying you a higher rate.

Conventional wisdom says to charge what you’re worth and stick with it. However, newbies like us don’t have the luxury of turning away work. By raising your rates to match your workload, you can work on getting higher paying clients without going through long stretches without work (and money).

Run It Like A Business

The people who use you consistently are people who need professionals who deliver high-quality content on time. In my mind, the only reason to miss a deadline is if the client is not ready to take delivery. You can find good writers and good business people, but it’s much more difficult to find people who are both. If you write well and conduct yourself professionally, you shouldn’t have any problems finding work.

Many people think that starting a website is really hard and it need a lot of design and programming skills. Actually you don’t need any programming skills because there are many free to use CMS out there.
What is a CMS? CMS stand for “Content Management System”. Consider it as a ready to use website. All you have to do is add content. Making the menu is really easy. Just mush a few buttons and you are done.
What about the design? The CMS already has a very good looking template, but I know that you don’t want your website to looks just like any other website here on the internet. That is exactly why all good CMSs have a template system. This allows the administrator to ad custom made templates that will change the appearance of the website. The templates can be free or they can be purchased from special websites for a very low budget.
Before you start making the website you must first need a niche. Choose a niche that interests you. Something that you would love to write and you would like to study more about. The key to a successful website is good content. And you can’t have good content if you don’t know anything about the niche and you don’t like learning anything about it. If it does not interest you, then don’t choose it.
You have a niche, but what CMS to choose? Like I said…there are many on the net. If you want a fully functional website I strongly recommend Joomla. It is the most flexible CMS and has many plugins and templates for you to choose from. Install it, search for a good template and now you just have to write the content. If you just want a blog you can host it your-self, in witch case I recommend to use WordPress, or you can have it hosted on blogspot.com or wordpress.com. I strongly recommend hosting it yourself.

What else do you need now? ADS! It is time to make make money out of your website. That is why you need to have some sort of ads on your website. For this I recommend Adsense. Just follow the TOS. Once you get banned, there is no way you can get back in. Also you can combine Adsense with Kontera. Just remember not to put Adsense ads together with ads from different publishers that server similar ads as aspect.

(sounds familiar? 2004 Google Lunar rings any bells?). It turned out to be just another hoax. If you go to the FAQ page, the last question is like this:

Okay, come on — seriously. Is this Virgle thing for real?

What, you doubt us? Well, yes — Virgle is real.

Notice the links?

For more information visit: http://www.google.com/virgle/index.html

2. Google and Orkut displays its name as Yougrt

3. Google also announced gDay, a special technology that will let you search pages BEFORE they are created. Google also launched a press release with this to make it even more plausible: http://www.google.com.au/intl/en/gday/press.html

4. Gmail Custom time. In gmail user have the possibility to allow its users to “pre-date” their messages and choose to have the message appear as “read” or “unread”. even the interface has a new option now to make it a really good hoax.

5. Google added the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button to its calendar feature. When you tried to create a new event, you were given the regular option of entering the correct details and hitting “Create Event,” and also the new option of “I’m Feeling Lucky” which would set you up with an evening date with celebrities. To bad it isn’t real.

6. Google launched their “Wake Up Kit” as a calendar notification option. The option sends a series of increasingly aggressive alerts, starting with an SMS message to your cellphone, and ending with a bucket of water dumped into your bed, which would then flip over, tossing you out (all using apparently-free equipment).

7. In google Docs a little easter egg was added, where a user can click the file menu and directly under new document is “New Airplane” which immediately opens a copy of a Google branded paper airplane. To reach the file menu, click the new menu, then “Document” then a new window opens.

8. For Adsense users google anounced Adsense for conversations. Here google will display ads in a screen on top of your head when you have a conversation with others. )

for more info: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2008/04/introducing-adsense-for-conversations.html

9. Google launches Manpower Search (??????) in China (google.cn). This new feature is powered by 25 million volunteers who do the searching around the clock. When the user entered a keyword, volunteers will search any possible answers from a mass of paper documents as well as online resources. The user is expected to get the search result within 32 seconds.

10. Google Books has a new section allowing users to ‘scratch and sniff’ certain books. Users are asked to “…please place your nose near the monitor and click ‘Go’” which then ‘loads odours’. When clicking on ‘Help’ users are redirected to a Google Book page entitled “Belgravia: A London Magazine”

So that is about all. Make sure you check them all out. I guarantee you will have a good laugh.

A few days ago I read an interesting question on a forum. What is better for SEO: PHP or HTML? In order to answer this question we must first know exactly what PHP and HTML are, when we use them and how a web-spider interprets them.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. Actually it is a text file that is interpretated by the web browser as a web page. It can’t do anything dynamically on it’s own. On the other hand, PHP is a programing language. PHGP can do things dynamically, can interact with variables, can interrogate data bases and can interact with the server. BUT PHP is not rendered by the web browser.

As strange as it sounds, php actually is rendered by the server as HTML. When you open a PHP file in your browser, the server runs the PHP script that actually returns HTML code. This HTML code is what the browser renders as a web page. You don’t have access to the PHP source from your browser. That is exactly why you can’t even run PHP files on your computer if you don’t have PHP server installed that know how to run PHP scripts.

But I still did not answer the question: Is it better to make a website in PHP or in HTML? If you want a complex website, with dynamic content and user registration and stuff like that, than you can do this only in PHP (or ASP.NET – another web programing language). If you only want something simple with a few pages and a few images, than HTML will do the trick.

But what about for SEO? It doesn’t matter. The web crawler doesn’t have access to your PHP file and can only see the HTML page that is rendered by running the PHP script. So even if you make a dynamic page in PHP or a static page in HTML, the outpus is simple HTML and the spider can only see this.

Today while browsing DigitalPoint Forum I saw an interesting new thread that had the same title as this article. It appears that Google is going to change the search Algorithm once again. Many years back you could stuff your meta tags with keywords and get to the top of Google – very simple! And Google clicked on to this, that’s when the massive Florida update happened and pagerank came into play.

Now Google will to implement a new and more accurate algorithm. Now it is really easy to get hundreds of backlinks with out a lot of effort, so the number of backlinks and the websites PR don’t always show how relevant a website is for a specific set of keywords.

Now your asking how is it going to be changed, Google will soon be looking at factors such as: Visitors, Time on Site, Bounce Rate etc. – Basically all the information that you can get from Google Analytics, nearly every web site on the net is hooked up to Analytics, so they are going to utilize this information and add this to there algorithm.

This new algorithm should return much more relevant search results and will make the content of the website much more important than it is today. Hope that I am not to excited about this, but only time will tell if the changes will be good or not.

Google had not specified a date when the modifications will take place, so we just have to sit and wait.

If you made a website I know how hard it is to promote it. You can try to submit it to directories and all, but there is another way to promote your website for free. This involves some work but the outcome will be good if you do it the right way. You can do this by joining Yahoo! Answers. How? Read the rest to find out.

Yahoo Answers is a community where people place questions and anyone can answer them. It is a grate website for discovering and learning new things, but also a good place to promote your website. All you have to do is answer questions.

Go to the category that has to do with your website. Look for questions that you have articles about on your website. Answer those question, but don’t but all the information there. Make a it short, make sure the user can understand it exactly. If your answer is really god, then it will be chosen as “Best Answer”.

OK! But how will I promote my website this way? Simple! When you answer a question there is a filed called “Source”. Just put your website URL there. This way, if the person wants more information it will go to your website. But there are also more other people that want answers for the same question, so when they will see the question, they will also see your best answer, so they will see the link to your website=>they will visit your website.

Like I said, this takes a little time and need some work, but the traffic will be good. I done a little experiment. on Tuesday and on Wednesday answered to 5 questions/day ONLY. This is a total of 10 questions answered. From these, 3 have been chosen as “Best Answer”. From Tuesday and until Friday I received at least 3 unique visits from Yahoo! Answers. If you answer daily 20-30 questions, and you have only 5 Best Answer/day, then you could get some really nice traffic.

But be really careful because there is a high risk you could have your account suspended if you do this to much. So post only good and useful answers and also post 5-10 answers that don’t include links to your website. This way there won’t be a pattern and it will be more difficult ban you.
