In the past months the tablet has been in the media very often. Since Apple released the iPad, more and more companies struggled to release similar products that have a lot of function and a reasonable price. So far very few have succeeded. Most of the tablets that are released are from Chinese vendors and run an outdated OS on outdated hardware. But they discovered that if they want to sell there products they have to offer good quality products, upgrade there OS and support the community. So more and more Android 2.1 tablets emerged. But, only one company managed to release the first ever Android 2.2 tablet, a real iPad alternative. The tablet I am talking about is the WITS A81E, a tablet that is running Android 2.2 on a Cortex A8 processor at 600MHz. It has a 7″ touchscreen, 256MB RAM, 3D acceleration, supports 480p video and some 720p as well and best of all it runs Adobe Flash 10.1 out of the box. This way you can enjoy YouTube videos and play online games without any problems.

Optional, the Wits A81E can be equipped with a GPS module and used as a car GPS. There still are some minor problems (a few applications force close) but Wits promised an update very soon, and so far it did not disappointed. The tablet initially runned Android 2.1, but, as promised Wits released 2 Firmware updates to Android 2.2 and will do so further on. Now, the tablet can be bought with 2.2 out of the box and you can view the internet as you do on a computer. The price is 199$ and an extra 15$ will get you the GPS packed tablet. Get it while there are still in stock from here.

As you may know from a previous post that I have a CECT P168+ (chinese phone). The phone works grate, but it has a few major downsides. One of the most important downside is that the browser is really bad. It does not render almost any web page. I could not even access my gMail account. Well…I found a solution.

First of all, I must warn you that this involves editing things in the engineering mode. So, if you have a flashing cable this is the moment to make a backup of your firmware. Also, Don’t change enything else except for what I am telling you. You can really easy brick your phone if you don’t know what you are doing.

So, let get started. first of all go to engineering mode. To do this dial *#3646633# on the screen. You will see a list of setting. Go to Misc. and then to WAP. What we must do is change the type of pages the browser accepts. Go to Accept Header and change it to HTML. Until now the browser only accepted WAP2.0 pages. So rendering gMail or other more complex pages was impossible. Click OK and then Back.

Another thing we must to is trick the server to think we are using a more complex phone with a very advanced browser. That is why we must change the User Agent. Right now, it is set to MAUI E800. I tested a few and the one for Nokia N72, N93 and for SE E900i and W800i work best. if you have time (and money) test the others as well and if you find one that works better post it here. Press OK and then back.

Press the Red button to exit engineering mode. Now, you should be able to browse more websites. I also discovered that it opens pages a little faster than before. The thing is, that now it will open images as well. So it will make more traffic. Unless you have a plan that lets you browse website at very cheap prices from your mobile phone I don’t recommend this.

This should also work on the original CECT P168 and also on the CECT P168c, but I did not try it cause I don’t have any of the other phones.

Hope this was useful for you all.

A few days ago Google has finally announced the first phone that will run on the new, open source, Android OS. The phone is the HTC G1 (also known as HTC Dream).

The new Google phone will first be supplied only on T-Mobile network, but in the future (about the begining of 2009) the phone will be available in Europe as well.

As we expected, the Google phone will be a really good rival to the iPhone, not only because of its design and configuration, but mostly because of the Android OS, and open source mobile OS. This has many advantages. First of all, there will be many applications available (both free and payed) and secondly you will always find help if something goes wrong.

The G1 comes with a nice touch-screen, a full QWERTY keyboard and with many applications pre-installed. The Android OS has a nice web browser, applications like Google Maps, Gmail and many more. Also, it is very customazible, Android letting you replace even key-features of the OS.

The phone has nice 3MP camera, but sadly no flash. Also, this is really cool internet device, beein 3G compatible and also having Wi-Fi capabilities.

The price will start from about 135$ and will hit the US market this month.

You can see a short video below:

Until a month ago I only had a CD-Rom and a CD-Writer. I did not use those to mutch…mostly for burning Hollyday pictures, websites back-ups and projects that I was working on. To me it was more than enough. Until I came back from the contest I’ve been writting a few posts back.

There, at the end of the contest, we each received a DVD that contained all the seminars that were held, all the projects that were presented (including the ones made at the Open part of the contest) and some pictures that others took. Evrything had about 3GB…so it was imposible to put them on one CD and inneficient to split everything so it will fit on more CDs. Now I realised that I really needed a small upgrade for my comptuer. Not only I could not see the content of the DVD, but I couldn’t even make copies of the DVD to send to the other two members from my team (they could not make it to the contest).

So, I bought a DVD-RW and everything was fine. I went on holyday, and when I came back it was picture time. Here, it turned out, that a CD was also useless. The total ammount of pictures that we tooks was 1,7GB…way more than a CD can hold. Lucky for me…I already had a DVD writer and could put everything on a nice DVD for sending to my friends.

At this time, I also started to download some Linux LIVE CDs. Every distro was build in such a way it could fit on a CD. Also, because they were bootable CD’s I could not put them all on one DVD. So, here was I, going back to the old-fashion CD.

Anyway, I put a question in the title. Is the CD era over? Well…not yet, but it does not have more time. Even the DVD is now an old device. The new Blue-ray disc has much more storadge capacity. But, beeing at it’s begining, the DVD still has a lot of ‘life’ in front of it.
